At the time of writing, our second visit to Kang Nam comes about a year apart. On our first visit, we shared the Sashimi 'Mega' for lunch among 6 adults. We were thoroughly pleased and satiated. It's a wonder why it took almost a whole year for us to come back. See Isabel W's review on that visit.
Our most recent visit was just me and Acelyn. This time we each went with a sashimi-udon special for lunch. Thinking we were going to need more food, we ordered an Orange Roll for good measure. As our combos came out, I quietly regretted ordering the roll as I already knew the combo was adequately filling. Either way, glad the Orange Roll was on the table. I was interested in it from the moment I put eyes on rolls section on the menu. I was affirmed when our server made the rec when Acelyn inquired. Mid-lunch, Acelyn and I started planning for our next lunch at Kang Nam. We don't plan on waiting another year to return for our third visit.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Mar 11, 2024
I wasn't blown away by the food but felt like it earned a 5 stars for service, fair pricing, and presentation. The food is solid - tastes fresh, is flavorful, just not amazing. All entrees come with a small salad and miso soup. They have an extensive roll menu and I landed on the Twister Roll and enjoyed it! It was exactly what I was looking for, and I'm sure anyone can find something that suits them with their menu size. They also have many non-sushi items!
There's a good chance you'll be tucked into a private room, which made the experience feel more upscale - it was really nice to have a room to ourselves without having to pay a premium! Service was always attentive and food came out in a timely manner. We all loved the free ice cream that they give you at the end!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Feb 15, 2024
I genuinely can't wrap my head around how they're turning a profit with the amount of food they give you for the price, but I'm definitely not complaining. Their lunch bento is an excellent value for $13, with soup, salad, banchan, and plenty of sides along with the main dish. They even offered ice cream at the end of the meal.
The restaurant was fairly small so it was a bit of a wait to be seated, but everyone was so friendly and communicative. Food was great, prices were unbelievable considering the portions, and we'll definitely be back for more.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jan 28, 2024
What was Buford Highway like 50 years ago? Was it a place filled with international cuisine, abstract strip malls and a sense of otherworldliness? Those who did not grow up in the city have plenty of wonders as such to ponder upon during a visit to Kang Nam.
Kang Nam is a trip into a time long passed. Having opened in 1970, it's seen it all. The place opened when the Cold War was still raging, when Michael Jackson's top hits were just getting rolling and humans just landed on the moon a year earlier. Now, it stands as a relic that is still popular for those in the know. Five o'clock opening time comes and the parking lot is already full of characters, some smoking in their cars nervously looking at their watches, others eagerly awaiting by the door, peeking to see the movement happening inside. Hunger driven thoughts flow by, such as, "maybe they'll open a minute or two earlier?"
A Japanese restaurant ran by Koreans is about as Atlanta as it gets. After all, the Korean diaspora in the city is substantial and who does not love Japanese food? Fish soup, kim chi, flounder sashimi and American style sushi rolls are all here. Oh, and the free ice cream comes for the dessert. The meal is delicious. Sure, one might say that the fish soup is a bit heavy on bone fragments and that the flounder sashimi is a bit on the tougher side, but the meal as a whole is an excellent one. The fish is fresh and it is priced remarkably well. Kim chi is spectacular and so is the broth in the fish soup. Cuts of fish for nigiri are as generous as they get. There are a few bottles of high quality sake and an Italian made Asahi beer. Yes, you did hear that correctly.
The people who work Kang Nam are kind, genuinely trying to make people happy, while also instructing very directly, how things should be done. Don't place your beer on the table, use the paper mat for that. Don't give away your spoon, you will need it for the soup later. Kang Nam is an unquestionable gem in the city and it's the kind of spot that needs to stick around for at least another 50 years.Helpful 6Thanks 2Love this 6Oh no 0 - 267295361Jan 27, 2024
I'm so happy to have discovered an authentic sushi spot in Atlanta. Went to Kang Nam for a quick lunch break, and was greeted with a friendly smile and an open seat. I checked two rolls off of the menu and the food didn't even take 10 minutes. The sushi rolls were fantastic and very reasonably priced from $6.99 to $12.99.
The rolls also came with a really nice spread of salads, kimchi, miso soup. After lunch was done I was even asked if I had room for some complimentary ice cream, phenomenal service. Would highly recommend this amazing institution!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - 125140377Oct 4, 2023
No frills sushi/Korean restaurant. Most of the menu is Japanese but they also have some Korean dishes outside of the sushi menu and they bring out the typical Korean condiments to have with your food.
It felt like a feast dining in here. Out of all our apps my favorite was the potato balls. Our sushi was very fresh and I also really enjoyed the galbi beef we ordered. Really great customer service as well, everyone was so kind and helpful.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jan 23, 2024
Be on the lookout! I missed the turn once, but navigated through a couple parking lots to make my way back over to where Kang Nam was! It was a bit hard to spot because the big sign by the road had characters and below it "Japanese restaurant" (pictured). However, when looking at the building itself, I could see the Kang Nam sign with characters on it matching the road sign. Success! The parking lot was filled, save for one spot open for me! I parked and headed in.
Upon entering, I met the hostess at the front desk. After informing her of my reservation, I was seated promptly and asked if I wanted ice water or hot tea. I excitedly asked for hot tea, but I should have requested both for reasons you will understand as you continue reading. My friend was just a few minutes behind me because she too passed the entrance. The restaurant is very quaint, so she was able to immediately spot me at my booth when she came in. Not long after she sat down, they brought us each a hot tea--or rather, a warm tea--that was surprisingly inside a plastic cup that you'd put water or other cold drinks in instead of a teacup. Kind of odd but no worries... The food was all yummy. It was an unexpected treat to get complimentary miso soup and ginger salad before our meals, as well as little shareable cucumber salad, kimchi, and peanuts appetizers. The peanuts were so good! I did some googling and discovered that they must be Korean Ddangkong Jorim (Soy Braised Peanuts). They were addictive. We also enjoyed our seaweed and cucumber salads we ordered, as well as our sushi rolls (my friend got the spicy salmon and I got the Buford roll).
One negative thing I will say is that it took my friend and I asking FOUR times for glasses of water to actually get it. To be straightforward: that is unacceptable. We asked our waitress 3 times and on the third time she wanted us to pay our bill seemingly before a water was brought, like some kind of weird trade off. We paid, and waters were still never brought. Finally, I asked another server and he ended up being the one who gave the waters to us. We were so thirsty, we chugged them before leaving. Please do better with the drink situation. I am not the first customer to mention it, looking through the Yelp reviews.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Sep 16, 2023
We had a party of 3 for dinner at 7 pm on Saturday, 9/8/23. Service was great. Everyone made us feel so welcome. Sushi was delicious. The presentation on the boat was a definite bonus! The banchan was good--I liked the peanuts in particular.
The sushi came with soup and salad, which was really nice! Here's what we got:
- Perfect Roll ($12.99): Good!
- Samurai Roll ($11.99): I think this was my favorite!
- Alaska Roll ($9.99): Straight mayo on top. Not my favorite.
- Spicy Tuna Sandwich Roll ($9.99): So fun and different!
- Yami Yami Roll ($12.99): Baked and very saucy.
The rolls were so cheap, compared to other sushi restaurants in the area, and the food was good! The prices and the service made this 5 stars. I would definitely go back!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - Oct 21, 2023
I came here with family for lunch, and while it was my first time here, my family was super excited. They live out in California now, but since my brother in law is Korean, he was craving this spot since he claims it is one of the few spots that serves Korean style sushi.
I ordered the #1 lunch combo, and for $26, it comes with SO MUCH FOOD. My boyfriend ordered the #5 combo, and my aunt and her husband ordered the all day combo, Lobster Jungsik.
Again, I have to emphasize that the #1 lunch combo and the Lobster Jungsik comes with A LOT of food. We would feel full and would just be talking, and then we would see the waiters come out with the next portion that we forgot about.
My combo started with a pumpkin soup that was more like a purée for me, but it was so delicious. I want to go back for the pumpkin soup alone. The combo also comes out with three kinds of sashimi, 3 pieces of nigiri, and 2 pieces of a California roll. They also give grilled mackerel, shrimp tempura, roe rice, and a spicy fish soup. Again, a lot of food haha.
The sashimi and nigiri was so delicious, and they were generous with their portions. The grilled mackerel was great, but I loved the spicy fish soup. I've never had a soup like it before, but I think I will have to plan my next trip again just writing this review.
While the lobster Jungsik is definitely pricey, it comes with even more food. I am not a fan of flounder or lobster sashimi, but they loved their food.
The restaurant interior is definitely deceiving when walking in as it looks so small, but we were led to a huge private room off of the entrance room. It is definitely larger than you would think.
I am definitely going back soon.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
